We contacted the authorities of the guarded center in Lesznowola in connection with the lack of medical assistance for a striking foreigner.

The Association received information that an ambulance was called to a foreigner complaining of a sudden deterioration of his health during the night. At that time, the foreigner was on a hunger strike, caused by another extension of his stay in the centre, and the medical rescue team was called by a person who was not staying in the guarded centre. The medical dispatcher accepted the notification, but after the arrival of the ambulance, the Border Guard officers refused the medical rescue team to enter the guarded center and examine the foreigner. At the same time, the foreigner was not provided with any other medical assistance due to the lack of qualified medical personnel.

In our opinion, there was a failure to provide professional medical assistance to a foreigner in detention and to assess the foreigner’s health condition by unauthorized persons.

In our intervention, we to the right of every foreigner placed in detention to 24-hour access to appropriate medical care. The refusal of the Border Guard officers to admit paramedics to the patient is not an instrument of protection against unfounded ambulance calls. It may, however, lead to a threat to the foreigner’s health or life.
