Declaration of NGOs regarding the recent social upheavals
We, representing social organisations, adamantly object to the actions of Polish authorities which create social tension and lead to its escalation. Polish people countrywide have taken to the streets to protest against an infringement of basic women rights under a decision of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal taken by a panel of judges presided over by Julia Przyłębska on 22 October 2020. An unprecedented social opposition to the decision understandably followed, especially among the young. The reaction of the authorities to the people expressing their outrage and disapproval is puzzling. The government has refused to acknowledge the protesters as valid opponents in a discussion, looked down on and downplayed the points they made and arguments they proposed, clearly threatened to resort to violence, and urged the deputy prime minister in charge of security to take violent action. All this is a source of great apprehension and strong opposition.
We believe that the Polish government is responsible for destabilising the situation in the country and for the ensuing threats to the health and safety of the general public. The government uses state institutions and the continuously deepening pandemic crisis as means to political ends, acting against the best interests of the people and thus forcing them to voice their objection to such a state of affairs by protesting on the streets.
We, as representatives of social organisations, fully support those who protest against violation of the rights of women. They protest to defend our dignity and basic rights. We approve of the civic courage and determination of the protesters who, exercising their right of civil disobedience, strive to defend the freedom of us all.
We will support the protesters, both as regular citizens and as part of our professional activity within social organisations, using any and all means at our disposal. Among other things, we will provide them with legal assistance, participate in civil law proceedings involving them, help them to file appeals to international organisations protecting health and civic rights, and aid women whose rights are being infringed.
